Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce – what is the difference?

Magento Open Source (formerly Magento Community Edition) is a free, self-hosted e-commerce platform with a large extension ecosystem, full code access, and no licence fees. Adobe Commerce (formerly Magento Commerce) is the commercial version, adding B2B features, a hosted cloud option, advanced segmentation, and Adobe Experience Cloud integrations – at significant annual licence cost.

For most mid-sized businesses, Magento Open Source covers the full feature set required – including complex product catalogues, configurable products, multi-store, multi-currency, and extensive third-party integrations. Adobe Commerce becomes relevant when you need native B2B account management, shared catalogues with customer-specific pricing, or tight integration with Adobe's marketing suite. We advise you openly on which variant fits your situation before any development work begins.

Magento Open Source Our focus

  • No licence fees – full code access and ownership
  • Complex product catalogue: configurable, bundle, grouped, virtual
  • Multi-store, multi-currency, multi-language from one installation
  • Extensive extension marketplace (Magento Marketplace, third-party)
  • Scales to hundreds of thousands of products and high traffic
  • Full flexibility for custom integrations: ERP, PIM, CRM, DAM

Adobe Commerce

  • All Magento Open Source features, plus:
  • Native B2B: company accounts, shared catalogues, quote management
  • Customer segmentation and personalised pricing rules
  • Adobe Experience Cloud integration (Analytics, Target, Campaign)
  • Managed cloud hosting option (Adobe Commerce Cloud)
  • Significant annual licence cost – typically from mid-five-figures EUR

Adobe Commerce makes economic sense when B2B features or Adobe suite integration are core requirements. For standard B2C and most B2B scenarios, Magento Open Source with custom extensions covers the requirement at a fraction of the cost.

Magento vs. WooCommerce vs. Shopify

Magento is the right platform when your product catalogue is large and complex, your business logic is non-standard, or you need full technical control without monthly platform fees. WooCommerce is faster to launch for simpler shops. Shopify is strong for direct-to-consumer brands that want managed infrastructure without technical overhead.

Our Magento & Adobe Commerce Services

From a new Magento shop to a migration from Shopware, WooCommerce, or an ageing Magento 1 installation – we implement Magento projects end-to-end, including ERP integration, performance optimisation, and ongoing maintenance.

New Magento Shop

Custom Magento Open Source implementation built around your catalogue structure, checkout logic, and business requirements – from concept and UX to go-live and handover.

  • Custom Magento theme development (Hyvä or Luma-based)
  • Product catalogue architecture: attributes, attribute sets, categories
  • Checkout configuration, payment, and shipping methods
  • German legal compliance: AGB, Widerrufsrecht, DSGVO-konformes Tracking
  • From €8,000 (depending on scope)

Magento Theme & Frontend Development

Magento's default Luma theme is slow and overbuilt. We develop lean, conversion-optimised Magento frontends – either on the modern Hyvä framework (Alpine.js + Tailwind, significantly faster Core Web Vitals) or as a custom Luma child theme.

  • Hyvä theme development (recommended for new projects)
  • Custom Luma child theme for existing installations
  • Mobile-first, Core Web Vitals optimised
  • Pixel-accurate implementation from design mockups
  • PageSpeed audit before and after launch

ERP, PIM & Third-Party Integration

Magento's real strength in mid-sized businesses is its integration capability. We connect your Magento shop to existing backend systems – keeping product data, stock, orders, and customer accounts in sync without manual data entry in multiple systems.

  • ERP integration (SAP, Sage, Microsoft Dynamics, Lexware, custom)
  • PIM integration (Akeneo, Pimcore, Contentful, custom)
  • Payment providers: Stripe, PayPal, Klarna, Mollie, Unzer
  • Shipping: DHL, DPD, UPS, GLS API integration
  • Real-time stock sync and order status webhooks

Magento Migration

Migrating to Magento from Shopware, WooCommerce, Shopify, or an end-of-life Magento 1 installation? We migrate products, customer data, orders, and content – and map all old URLs to preserve your Google rankings.

  • Full data migration: products, categories, customers, orders
  • Magento 1 → Magento 2 / Open Source migration
  • URL mapping and 301 redirects for all old paths
  • SEO audit before and after launch
  • Parallel operation period with fallback option

Performance & Core Web Vitals

A slow Magento shop loses conversions and Google rankings. Default Magento with Luma scores poorly on Core Web Vitals – especially LCP and TBT. We audit, identify the specific bottlenecks, and implement targeted fixes rather than generic "speed optimisation" that does not address root causes.

  • Full page speed and Core Web Vitals audit
  • Full Page Cache, Varnish, and Redis configuration
  • Image optimisation pipeline and lazy loading
  • JavaScript bundle reduction and critical CSS extraction
  • Elasticsearch / OpenSearch catalogue search optimisation

Magento Maintenance & Security

Magento requires regular security patches – Adobe releases them on a fixed schedule, and unpatched installations are targeted within days. We keep your Magento installation current, extensions compatible, and the server environment hardened.

  • Magento security patch application on release
  • Extension updates with compatibility testing on staging
  • Daily backups with tested restore process
  • Uptime monitoring and incident response
  • From €149 / month

Typical Magento challenges – and how we address them

Magento is powerful. But power without the right configuration and maintenance approach creates predictable problems.

Problem

The Magento shop is painfully slow – especially on mobile

Magento with Luma theme and a stack of third-party extensions frequently scores in the 20–40 range on Google PageSpeed Insights mobile. Large JavaScript bundles, render-blocking resources, and unoptimised images from the default media pipeline combine to produce poor Core Web Vitals that harm both conversions and organic rankings.

Solution

Targeted performance audit followed by Hyvä migration or Luma optimisation

We start with a full page speed audit – CrUX data, Lighthouse runs across key templates, waterfall analysis – to identify the specific causes rather than applying generic fixes. For shops still on Luma, targeted optimisation significantly improves scores. For new or replatformed shops, the Hyvä frontend framework consistently delivers Core Web Vitals in the 80+ range.

Problem

Product and stock data is maintained in two places – shop and ERP

Without a reliable sync between the Magento shop and the company's ERP or PIM system, product data drifts: prices in the shop differ from those in the ERP, stock levels shown to customers are inaccurate, and new products require manual entry in multiple systems. This creates operational overhead and customer trust issues when orders are placed for out-of-stock items.

Solution

Bidirectional ERP/PIM integration with real-time stock sync

We implement a defined data flow between Magento and your ERP or PIM: product data and pricing flow from ERP/PIM into Magento, orders flow from Magento into the ERP.

Problem

The Magento installation runs on an outdated version with unpatched security vulnerabilities

Adobe patches Magento on a regular quarterly schedule plus out-of-band critical patches. Many shops fall behind because each update requires testing against a custom theme and a stack of third-party extensions. The cost of staying current feels higher than the risk of deferring – until a breach or a sudden PCI-DSS audit changes that calculation.

Solution

Structured patch process with staging environment and compatibility matrix

We maintain a compatibility matrix for your installed extensions against current and upcoming Magento versions. Every patch is applied to a staging environment first, automated smoke tests run against key shop functions, and the patch is applied to production only after sign-off. Critical security patches are applied within 48 hours of release.

Frequently Asked Questions about Magento

What does a Magento shop cost?

A new Magento Open Source shop starts at €8,000 for a focused scope – custom theme, product catalogue setup, payment and shipping configuration, and German legal compliance. Projects with ERP integration, custom extension development, or large catalogue migration typically land between €12,000 and €30,000.

Magento is not the right choice for a €3,000 shop. If your budget is below €6,000, WooCommerce or Shopify will serve you better at that price point. We tell you this in the first conversation, not after three weeks of scoping.

Magento or Shopware – which platform for mid-sized businesses?

Both are legitimate e-commerce platforms for mid-sized businesses with complex requirements. Magento Open Source has no licence fees and a larger global extension ecosystem. Shopware (especially Shopware 6) has a strong German market presence, a more modern developer experience, and a well-designed admin interface.

Magento tends to be stronger for very large catalogues, complex configurable products, and scenarios requiring extensive customisation. Shopware tends to be stronger for shopping experience features, content-rich shops, and teams that value a more intuitive backend. The right choice depends on your specific requirements – we advise you openly on both.

Is Magento 1 really end of life – and what should we do?

Yes. Adobe ended official support for Magento 1 in June 2020. No further security patches are released for the platform. Running a Magento 1 shop today means operating a publicly known, unpatched e-commerce system that processes payment data – this is a significant security and compliance risk.

Migration to Magento 2 (Open Source) or an alternative platform is necessary. We assess your Magento 1 installation, map your product and order data, and plan a migration that preserves rankings and customer accounts. The migration timeline and cost depend on the complexity of your current customisations and catalogue size.

What is Hyvä and why does it matter for Magento?

Hyvä is a Magento frontend theme framework that replaces the default Luma theme and its underlying JavaScript stack (RequireJS + KnockoutJS) with a much leaner stack based on Alpine.js and Tailwind CSS. The result is dramatically smaller JavaScript bundles and significantly better Core Web Vitals scores – shops built on Hyvä consistently achieve PageSpeed scores of 80–95 on mobile, compared to 20–50 for default Luma.

Hyvä is a paid licence (~€1,000 one-time per project), which we include in project costs for new Magento builds. For existing shops on Luma, migrating the frontend to Hyvä is often the most impactful single improvement available for both performance and conversion rate.

How long does a Magento project take?

A focused new Magento Open Source shop with a custom Hyvä theme, standard product catalogue setup, and payment/shipping configuration takes 8 to 14 weeks from kickoff to go-live. Projects with ERP integration, custom extension development, or large product catalogue migration are planned with 14 to 22 weeks.

The most time-consuming phase is typically product data preparation and ERP integration – not Magento development itself. Projects that arrive with clean, structured product data and a defined ERP data flow consistently deliver faster than those that need data cleaning and mapping during the project.

Is Magento suitable for B2B shops?

Magento Open Source supports B2B scenarios that do not require native company account management: customer group-based pricing, minimum order quantities, quote request via contact form, and custom checkout flows for business customers. This covers the majority of mid-market B2B requirements.

For scenarios that require native company accounts with multiple users, shared catalogues with customer-specific pricing negotiated per account, and purchase order approval workflows, Adobe Commerce adds these features natively. We assess which variant is actually necessary for your B2B requirements – in most cases, Magento Open Source with targeted customisation covers the requirement at significantly lower total cost.

Is Magento GDPR-compliant for the German market?

Magento itself is GDPR-neutral – compliance depends on configuration, extensions, and how third-party services are integrated. We configure every Magento shop for the German market: GDPR-compliant cookie consent management, no third-party scripts loaded without explicit consent, data processing agreements with all service providers, and correct implementation of Fernabsatzrecht requirements (AGB, Widerrufsbelehrung, Impressum).

Magento's native customer account and order data management keeps all data server-side by default, which simplifies GDPR compliance compared to platforms that relay data through third-party cloud services. Payment data is never stored in Magento – it passes through PCI-DSS compliant payment provider APIs.
