When does Shopify make sense – and when doesn't it?

Shopify is one of the most capable e-commerce platforms available – but it is not the right choice for every project. We work with both Shopify and WooCommerce and recommend what genuinely fits your situation. Here is our honest assessment.

Shopify shines when you need infrastructure that just works: automatic updates, built-in CDN, PCI-compliant checkout, and a stable platform that handles traffic spikes without you having to worry about server configuration. The trade-off is monthly platform costs and less flexibility for deeply custom requirements.

Shopify is the right choice when …

  • You want to launch quickly without managing server infrastructure
  • You process high order volumes and need guaranteed uptime
  • You sell in multiple countries and need multi-currency and multi-language out of the box
  • You use Shopify-specific apps for fulfilment, POS, or subscriptions
  • Your team needs a simple backend with no technical knowledge required

WooCommerce may be better when …

  • You want full ownership of your data without platform dependency
  • Monthly platform costs scaling with revenue are a concern
  • You need deeply custom product logic or ERP integration
  • SEO and content marketing are at the core of your strategy
  • You sell 10–500 products and want maximum flexibility at lower total cost

Not sure which platform fits?

We advise you openly in a free initial consultation – based on your products, your team, your growth plans, and your budget. No commercial preference for one platform over the other.

In our experience: for most SMEs in the German-speaking market, WooCommerce is the more economical long-term solution. Shopify makes clear sense for high-volume merchants, internationally scaling brands, and businesses that explicitly need the Shopify ecosystem.

Our Shopify Services

From a custom Shopify theme to a full migration from WooCommerce or Shopware – we implement Shopify projects end-to-end.

New Shopify Store

Custom Shopify theme, product setup, payment and shipping configuration – ready to sell from day one. We build on Shopify's Dawn or a clean starter, never on heavy multi-purpose themes.

  • Custom theme built on Shopify 2.0 with sections everywhere
  • Mobile-first checkout optimised for conversions
  • Payment setup: Shopify Payments, PayPal, Klarna
  • GDPR-compliant configuration for the German market
  • From €3,500 (depending on product count & features)

Shopify Theme Development

Your brand deserves more than a stock theme. We develop custom Shopify themes in Liquid that match your visual identity exactly – fast, accessible, and fully editable via the Shopify theme editor.

  • Shopify Liquid theme development from scratch
  • Fully customisable sections and blocks via theme editor
  • Optimised for Core Web Vitals and PageSpeed
  • Existing theme customisation and extension

Migration to Shopify

Moving from WooCommerce, Shopware, Magento, or an outdated system? We migrate your products, customer data, and order history cleanly – with 301 redirects for all old URLs so your Google rankings stay intact.

  • Products, variants, collections, and media transferred
  • Order history and customer accounts migrated
  • 301 redirects for all old product and category URLs
  • SEO audit before and after launch

Shopify App Integration & Automation

Shopify's app ecosystem is one of its biggest strengths. We select, configure, and connect the right apps for your workflows – and build custom Shopify app integrations where off-the-shelf solutions fall short.

  • Review apps: Okendo, Judge.me, Trustpilot
  • Email & SMS: Klaviyo, Omnisend setup and flows
  • Loyalty & subscriptions: Recharge, Seal Subscriptions
  • Custom ERP or fulfilment integration via Shopify API

International Shopify Setup

Shopify Markets and Shopify Translate & Adapt make Shopify the strongest platform for international commerce. We set up multi-currency, multi-language, and geo-based pricing so you can sell across borders from day one.

  • Shopify Markets configuration for multiple regions
  • Multi-currency pricing with automatic conversion
  • Translated storefronts with hreflang for SEO
  • Country-specific shipping and tax rules

Shopify Conversion Optimisation

More traffic alone does not increase revenue. We audit your existing Shopify store for conversion blockers and implement targeted improvements – from product page to thank-you page.

  • Checkout optimisation: fewer fields, trust signals, guest checkout
  • Product page audit: images, copy, social proof, urgency
  • Cart abandonment flows (Klaviyo or Shopify Email)
  • A/B testing setup and analytics configuration
  • Price on request (audit from €500)

How we implement Shopify projects

No bloated themes. No unnecessary apps. A store that loads fast and converts.

The biggest mistake in Shopify projects is treating the platform as a drag-and-drop website builder: installing a heavy multipurpose theme, adding 20 apps for basic features, and ending up with a store that loads in 6 seconds and has a checkout nobody understands. We build differently – lean theme code, a minimal app stack, and every decision justified by conversion data.

Problem

The Shopify theme looks great in the demo – and terrible on your products

Most premium Shopify themes are built for fashion photography with white backgrounds. If your products are technical, handmade, or niche, stock themes create a mismatch between your brand and the visual presentation that costs trust and sales.

Solution

Custom Liquid theme built around your products and brand

We design and develop a Shopify theme that starts with your product type, your customers, and your brand identity – not with a template that needs to be bent into shape. The result is a store that looks like it was made specifically for what you sell.

Problem

15 apps installed, the store loads slowly, and half the apps conflict

Every Shopify app injects its own scripts and styles into your storefront. Five apps for social proof, countdown timers, upsells, wishlists, and currency conversion add up to a store that fails Core Web Vitals and drives customers away before they reach the product page.

Solution

Minimal app stack – only what earns its place

Before recommending any app, we ask whether the function can be built directly into the theme. If an app is genuinely needed, we select the lightest option with proven maintenance and measure its impact on page speed before and after installation.

Problem

The German checkout is non-compliant and customers don't trust it

Shopify's default checkout requires specific configuration for the German market: correct privacy links, terms checkbox, imprint in the footer, and a checkout flow that meets German consumer protection requirements. Without this, you risk both legal issues and high abandonment rates.

Solution

German-market-ready checkout configuration as standard

We configure every Shopify store for the German market: privacy policy and terms in checkout, cookie consent via a GDPR-compliant CMP, correct VAT display, and a trust signal setup (payment logos, SSL badge, delivery promise) at the decision point.

Frequently Asked Questions about Shopify Shops

How much does a Shopify store cost?

Our Shopify development fee starts at €3,500 for a new store with custom theme, product setup, and payment configuration. Mid-sized projects with custom Liquid development, app integrations, and conversion optimisation typically land between €5,000 and €9,000.

On top of our development fee, Shopify charges a monthly platform fee starting at €36/month (Basic) to €399/month (Advanced), plus transaction fees depending on your plan. We factor this into our recommendation when comparing Shopify against WooCommerce for your specific situation.

Shopify or WooCommerce – which is right for my shop?

Shopify is the stronger choice if you need a fast launch without technical maintenance, process high order volumes, sell internationally, or rely on the Shopify app ecosystem for fulfilment or POS.

WooCommerce tends to be more economical for SMEs in the German market over a three-year horizon, especially as revenue grows and Shopify's percentage-based costs increase. It also offers more flexibility for custom product logic and SEO. We advise you openly on what fits your specific situation – without preference for either platform.

How long does a Shopify project take?

A new Shopify store with a customised theme and up to 50 products is typically ready in 3 to 5 weeks. Projects with custom Liquid development, complex app integrations, or international market setup take 5 to 8 weeks.

Migrations from other platforms are planned separately depending on the volume of products, orders, and the complexity of the redirect mapping. After a briefing, we give you a realistic timeline with clear milestones.

Can you migrate our WooCommerce or Shopware shop to Shopify?

Yes. We migrate products, variants, collections, customer accounts, and order history from WooCommerce, Shopware, Magento, and PrestaShop to Shopify. All old product and category URLs are covered by 301 redirects so your Google rankings are preserved.

Before recommending a migration to Shopify, we always check whether the move genuinely makes sense for your situation – sometimes staying on WooCommerce and rebuilding the theme is the better choice.

Is Shopify GDPR-compliant for the German market?

Shopify itself stores data on servers that may be outside the EU, which requires a data processing agreement with Shopify and careful configuration. We set up every Shopify store with German legal requirements in mind: correct privacy policy and terms in the checkout, cookie consent via a GDPR-compliant CMP, and data processing agreements with all relevant app providers.

For shops with newsletter tools or advertising pixels (Meta, Google), we integrate the necessary consent flows so that data is only transmitted after explicit user consent.

Which Shopify plan do you recommend?

For most new stores, Shopify Basic (€36/month) is sufficient to start. As order volume grows, the main driver to upgrade is the transaction fee: Basic charges 2% per transaction without Shopify Payments, while the standard Shopify plan (€105/month) reduces this to 1%.

If you use Shopify Payments (available in Germany), transaction fees are eliminated entirely. We factor plan costs into our total cost comparison when advising you on Shopify vs. WooCommerce.

Do you offer ongoing support after the Shopify store launches?

Yes. Unlike WooCommerce, Shopify handles platform updates automatically – so our post-launch support focuses on theme updates after Shopify version changes, app compatibility checks, conversion optimisation, and new feature development.

We offer ongoing support either on a retainer basis or project-by-project. You decide the model that fits your team and roadmap.
